Westmount – Milk Delivery

002

A dairy produce truck servicing the Westmount area.

This type of delivery service started, years ago, with horse-drawn wagons that gave way to the Ford F-Series in the 1940-50’s.

Today, quite surprisingly, there is still a market for these products to be delivered residentially – now in refrigerated trucks.

Holly (Ilex) – Ingelside Lane

015

Holly (Ilex) growing on Ingleside Lane. The species has a very interesting and varied history – this is just one aspect:

From: http://www.treesforlife.org.uk/forest/mythfolk/holly.html

“Holly trees were traditionally known for protection from lightning strikes, to which end they were planted near a house.

In European mythology, holly was associated with thunder gods such as Thor and Taranis.

We now know that the spines on the distinctively-shaped holly leaves can act as miniature lightning conductors, thereby protecting the tree and other nearby objects. Modern science occasionally catches up with an explanation for what may previously have been dismissed as superstitious lore!”

Westmount – Community Gardens

011

Tomatoes still growing in Westmount’s community gardens next to the athletic fields.

It is a bit of mystery how one obtains a garden plot for the summer season; I suspect it’s based on a “lottery basis” for residents living in apartment buildings.
